Did You See the Sky Tonight?

I wrote this a year ago as a Facebook post.

Did you see the sky tonight? I almost didn’t.  I was quite fatigued after work and had to throw myself down on my bed to rest a bit but, then, with renewed energy, I decided to run a few errands.  I was in Middletown and, when walking out to my car, I was awestruck – there is no other word – by the magnificence of the sky.  It was surely a late summer sky.  Half of it was as blue as the cornflower crayon that I always favored when coloring and then, on the other side, there were dusty coral clouds and grayish plum clouds.  The autumn clouds were trying to dominate the sky but the summer blues would not yield.  I couldn’t really get to a place where I could photograph this surreal sight so I just drove.  I drove with my windows down and the wind whipping through my hair as I always do in summer.  I drove barely able to keep my eyes on the road and off that sky.  Where was I headed?  To the waterfront in Keyport.  It was urgent that I get there before the dark descended and night obliterated the splendor.  And I made it in time to view the sky over the water.  The juxtaposition of summer and fall was so pronounced and caused me to be wistful despite my awe. The sight of this sky was downright haunting with fall trying to muscle in and summer refusing to yield.  Did you see the sky tonight?
